answers

1. Why do I need to purchase a subscription?

While Paper Mache is free, it uses the Instapaper API to save and sync articles to your webOS device. The use of this API requires the account have a paid subscription. This subscription fee goes to the creator of Instapaper, Marco Arment to support the servers that store and sync the articles you see in Paper Mache. As Marco says on his website:

"Instapaper is self-funded and pays nearly all of its expenses with revenue from the Instapaper iPhone app and the ads on the website, but customers using these advanced API methods may never buy the iPhone app or visit the website. Subscriptions cover the cost of hosting these API methods."

There are other Instapaper applications that are free, but they do not use the API, they use screen scraping methods and do not support the services that make Instapaper and Paper Mache possible. They also lack the ability to do things like sync your reading position across devices.

2. How do I purchase a subscription?

Visit instapaper.com , click Create Account in the upper right corner, then after creating a new account click the "subscribe" link or visit instapaper.com/subscription

3. How do I cancel my subscription?

Visit instapaper.com/subscription , and click "Cancel Subscription from PayPal". Subscriptions are with Instapaper, not with Paper Mache. The money goes to Marco Arment, not myself. To cancel, you need to cancel the Instapaper service, not Paper Mache. Paper Mache makes use of this service, but I dont run it.

4. What is Instapaper?

Instapaper is a website and iPhone and iPad application by Marco Arment that allows you to save web pages for reading later. See www.instapaper.com for further details.

Note that Ryan Watkins and Paper Mache are in no way affiliated with Instapaper. Paper Mache makes use of the Instapaper APIs so that you can use your Instapaper account to read and save articles from your webOS devices. Instapaper only makes applications for Apple devices, so apps for other platforms are written by others like myself.

5. How do I add articles to read?

There are several ways to add articles to read later.

1. Click the "To Add Articles" at the bottom of the folder list to browser articles at givemesomethingtoread.com, and click "Read Later" on any article you wish to sync. You may need to log in again to instapaper.com on your webOS device once.

2. Select "Add by URL ..." from the application menu, and enter the URL to the page you wish to save.

3. Install bookmarklet in your PC browser (IE, FireFox, Chrome, Safari, etc). Visit http://www.instapaper.com/extras and drag the "Read Later" bookmarklet to your browser toolbar. Then click when visiting any page you wish to save.

4. Email to your special @instapaper.com email address. Visit http://www.instapaper.com/extras and when signed in, there is an email address you can send articles to to be read later. The "Share Link" function from the webOS Browser can email an article and this will save the full article. You may wish to save this email address to your Contacts and then be able to easily save any page by email.

5. Visit other sites that integrate the "Read Later" button, including:

If these newly added articles do not appear immediately, click the "Sync" button in the toolbar, or select it from the application menu.

6. Install Preware and then use that to install the "Add to Paper Mache" patch to the webOS Browser application.

6. How do add a "Read Later" bookmarklet to the webOS Browser?

Currently it is not possible to use bookmarklets in the webOS Browser like you can on other platforms. This is a security restruction and not likely to change.

A "patch" is available that can be applied to the webOS Browser. This adds an "Add to Paper Mache" link to the Share menu. You can install this patch via Preware (see site and online tutorials for how to install Preware). The patch can also be downloaded and applied manually: papermache.patch .

A cross-app-launch API is available to other webOS applications that would like to integrate a "Save to Paper Mache" feature. App developers should call the application with a parameter of "action: 'add'". You can then pass paramters of "url", "title", "description" and "content". In most cases "url" is required and the others are optional. Email papermache@ryanwatkins.net for details.

7. Will you support Read It Later as well?

No. Use of the Instapaper API forbids use integration with Read It Later or similar services. See the Instapaper API Terms of Use :

"Apps must not include support for any other services that compete with or are substantially similar to Instapaper"

If you want Read It Later, there are other webOS apps available.

8. Is there a limit on the number of articles Paper Mache will sync?

Yes, Paper Mache will sync 50 items in your Archive and Liked folders, and 500 items in all other folders. If you need more, you can visit the instapaper.com website.

The intended use is that Unread or other folders have a "reasonable" number of articles you intend to read. After reading, articles are usually sent to the Archive, where they are available if you wish to find them again, though you may need to re-visit the website to find older ones.

Others may have different use patterns - delete everything after reading, or sort everthing into folders with a huge number of items each, but thats not the use pattern that this application is optimized for.

9. I've typed a search term, but it doesnt find anything?

Search terms must be atleast two characters long.

Search only checks the the article titles and their short description, it does not search the full text of the article.

Search only finds exact matches - it will not find something misspelled or with a minor typo. For example searching for "colour" will not find "color".

10. I've turned 'Show Notifications' to 'Off' in Preferences, but it doesnt hide all notifications?

Paper Mache requires a 'dashboard' style notification to be displayed while syncing, and this is likely what you are seeing. These cannot be disabled. If you wish to turn them off, you can set the 'Update Frequency' to 'Off'. Disabling the sync will then prevent the dashboard notification from appearing periodically, and Paper Mache will then only sync on application launch or when triggered manually via the app menu or toolbar.

There are two types of notifications in webOS - a quick message to the status area that appears for a few seconds, and a full 'dashboard' notification. The second 'dashboard' notification type is shown when Paper Mache is syncing. webOS requires this dashboard be present during the sync process, or it will terminate the application - applications cannot run without either a visible card or dashboard. Setting the 'Show Notifications' to false will disable all status messages, but not the dashboard notification.

11. Share to Facebook doesnt populate the Status with my article?

If you Share an article and select Facebook, Paper Mache will attempt to use the Facebook app if installed. If the app is not currently running, it will launch, but due to a bug in Facebook, it will not populate your Status with the article for posting. If the Facebook app is already running, this will work - it will come to the foreground and prompt you to send a message with the article title and url. If the Facebook app is not installed, it will do this via the Facebook.com website.

12. I get an "error during sync" message, how do I fix this?

You will need to review system logs for specific details on the error that is causing the issue, and then followup via email to papermache@ryanwatkins.net about the specific error you get.

Enter Developer Mode (Goto 'Just Type' on the main card screen, enter "20090606". The Developer Mode app will appear, select it and then turn it "On". You'll then need to click the "Submit" button with an empty password). Then close the app and plug your device into your PC with the USB cable. On your PC launch a web browser and goto http://ares.palm.com/AresLog/, click the "On" button and confirm it sees your device as connected. Then launch Paper Mache on your device and attempt to sync. Error message will appear in the browser on your PC. Paste the full contents of this log in an message detailing your issue to papermache@ryanwatkins.net

You may also need to install the Beta version which usually has more vebose logging information.

13. I get an error installing the "Add To Paper Mache" patch?

There is a Preware patch to install an "Add to Paper Mache" extenstion the webOS Browser application. If this patch is installed with the other "Download Link" patch, it likely conflicts (they both modify the same original Browser code) so the second one will fail. You likely need to uninstall the other patch, or manually apply the patch yourself. Patch file contents available here: papermache.patch .

14. The app fails to start up - stuck loading?

This is likley an issue with webOS 3.0.4 and fixed in webOS 3.0.5. The storage system in webOS that Paper Mache uses to cache your articles sometimes gets stuck. To fix, you'll need to restart your device. Press and hold the power button until the menu appears and select "Shut Down". Once the device has turned of, press again to power back up and the issue should be gone. Restarting the app does not usually fix this issue. It should be addressed in the next version of webOS.

The Beta version of Paper Mache can detect this condition and after attempting to connect for 45 seconds will display an alert about hte condition, but it is not possible to fix it. To resolve the issue you must restart your TouchPad.

15. The app fails to load articles but does load the folders and lists?

This is likely the same issue as the previous question - an SQL storage issue in webOS. When this appears it affects other apps as well, and can only be fixed by restarting the device or upgrading to webOS 3.0.5.

16. How is the Android version of Paper Mache different than the webOS version?

The initial version of Paper Mache for Android has some differences from the webOS version. Features specific to the webOS version currently include:
